President's Quarterly Message
I hope everyone is excited about the upcoming Riptide Rendezvous on October 21, 2017 at Rincon Beach! We’re thrilled to have Al Q as our Emcee – it just seems right that he is there after all his years of great work with the OneSurfFly Tournament. I smile every time I enter my garage because I have one of the tournament banners that I won in last year’s raffle hanging above the entry way into my house and it reminds me of the fun times! It’s free to participate in the tournament, but hopefully you’ll buy a t-shirt, a meal and help support our fundraising efforts as all proceeds benefit the Southwest Council. Here is the link to register: http://www.riptiderendezvous.com/register-buy/.
Come early for the free surf fishing clinic, and if you don’t want to fish, come on down for the camaraderie to just watch, or volunteer to help with registration or as a as a spotter, cook, or general helper. The motto of FFI is Conservation, Education and Community - this is a great opportunity to hang out with others who love our sport and experience our community.
Thanks to all those who have donated to the event: Marriott’s, Fishermen’s Spot, Rio, TFO, Patagonia, Aspen Reels, Island Tak & Sea Jay Sport Fishing, Fishpond and Black Strap.
Casting for Recovery, a wonderful program for women dealing with breast cancer, will be at Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucamonga each of the four weekends in October raising funds for their May 18-20, 2018 Retreat. These funds cover the cost of the retreat for 14 women so that they don’t have to pay for anything. Carole Ontiveros and Teresa Adams have taken over this great cause from Bonnie Anderson, and are doing a great job. Please call Carole at 760-912-7539 if you can help out by volunteering your time to take a shift. If you can’t make it out there to make a donation, please be sure to go to castingforrecovery.org, and donate there – make sure you include the note that it is for Southern California!
Save the date: the Southwest Council will be holding a Southern California Fly Fishing Show the weekend of October 20-21, 2018 at the Glendale Auditorium. Many of the vendors who have been coming to our Mammoth/Bishop Faires will be there, as will hopefully some new vendors. We will again be engaging in all things fly fishing. We look forward to seeing all of you there! More details to follow.
Last month I said I would be providing more information next month on the strategic vision of the FFI and how this can benefit each club and its members in the Council. I’m running out of room here, but one of the new exciting programs that is being met with great interest by several manufacturers is the industry partnership program whereby clubs can purchase items from manufacturers at substantial discounts for education and fundraising events. Previously, clubs were given a free TFO rod for each 12 or 18 new members they signed up to the FFI depending on the rod they selected. Now, each club will be given a credit of $75.00 for 12 new members and $110 for each 18 new members signed up to purchase items for a significant discount from such companies as TFO, Winston, Echo, Orvis, Peak Fly Tying, HMH and Wapsi. With the discounts given, in some cases this will cover the cost of a rod and reel.
If you aren’t a member of a club, and would like some information, shoot me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
is a FREE fly-fishing “tournament”, focused on fly-fishing the surf. The inaugural gathering is scheduled for October 21, 2017, at Rincon Beach Park in Carpinteria, California.
Riptide Rendezvous is a non-profit fundraising event for the Southwest Council of Fly Fishers international. There is no entry fee, but there will be a raffle with some great prizes at the end. All net proceeds from the raffle go to the SWC-FFI, to help fund fly-fishing outreach programs.
Al Q and friend
Immediately following the fishing, there will be an after-event BBQ. The raffle starts right after the BBQ, with our buddy, Al Quattrocchi acting as our Master of Ceremonies. Al “Q” is the founder of the original “One Surf Fly” tournament, and has been fishing the surf for over forty years.
Over the last twenty five years, he has donated much of his time to promoting and teaching saltwater fly fishing. Al is a fly fishing author, artist, photographer, fly tier and IGFA world record holder. and is a pro staff member for Tuffleye, Umpqua, and Enrico Puglisi products.
Like to find out a little more about what’s involved? Check out our “How It Works” page for an overview. You can also find out a bit more of the history behind the event on our “History” page.
Interested in participating, but don’t know how to fly-fish SoCal surf? Check out our “How-To” page, where we have a number of “getting started” links. We’ll also be holding an early-bird surf fly-casting clinic just prior to the tournament. The clinic will be taught by Fly Fishing International certified casting instructors, and will cover the best ways to get your fly out to those waiting surf perch.
Not sure where to stay? Check out our “Where” page, which lists some of the available accommodations closest to the event. There are also a couple of great campgrounds in the area, with facilities for both tent campers and RVs.
